Understanding Double Bed Sizes: Navigating Dimensions

Author imageThe Mattress Warehouse

Winter is fast approaching, and so are those long cold nights. So, selecting a double bed that perfectly complements your bedroom style and -dimensions is crucial. But you may be wondering, what is a double bed? Or maybe you are wondering if there are various sizes of double beds. We get it. It can get confusing quicker than you can say “goodnight”. But don’t sweat it. If you second-guess what mattress size to purchase for your double bed, The Mattress Warehouse has got you covered. In this blog, you’ll learn about different-sized beds that work for two people.

Choosing the Right Bed Size

They say laughter is the best medicine, but does it beat sleep? Catching good zizzes at night is so important for your health. Not only does sleep benefit you physically, but it helps you gain mental clarity and restore overall happiness. Choosing the right bed size and mattress will give your bedroom the perfect balance of space and comfort. Both of which ensure optimal sleep quality to achieve these health benefits.

Understanding Double Bed Sizes

Here’s the good news: Bed sizes in South Africa have standard dimensions. And according to those dimensions, a “double bed” is a bed size on its own. Now this is where it gets confusing. Mattress height is not standard and there are mattresses with similar size to the standard double or full bed. There may also be very slight differences depending on the manufacturer.

We’ve provided a breakdown of the bed sizes most commonly associated with the double bed:

Standard Double (Full) Bed

Dimensions: 137 cm x 188 cm

Description: Also referred to as a full bed, a standard double bed is the most preferred bed size for solo sleepers. Especially the ‘sprawling spider’ sleepers. It provided enough room for undisturbed stretching throughout the night. This bed size is also popular for snuggly couples or co-sleeping parents. Its size does not take up too much floor space.

Sealy Ponto Firm Double Bed.

Our Sealy Ponto Firm double bed generally fits most bedrooms and is suitable for guest rooms.

Extra Length Double Bed

Dimensions: 137 cm x 200 cm

Description: The extra-length double bed slightly differs from the standard double bed in terms of length. Admittedly, there’s no greater discomfort than dangling feet while trying to fall asleep. So, this bed is ideal for taller individuals who need extra legroom.

Queen Size Bed

Dimensions: 152 cm x 188 cm

Description: A queen-size bed is broader than a standard double bed. This size bed is ideal for couples who enjoy personal space. It is also suitable for individuals who enjoy sprawling out while sleeping. You also get an extra-length queen bed, which is slightly longer (152 cm x 200 cm). It mainly accommodates couples who may be taller than average, or at least where one partner is taller.

King Size Bed

Dimensions: 183 cm x 188 cm

Description: A king-size bed has extra width compared to a queen-size bed. This bed size provides ample space for couples where both (or one) partner is a sprawling sleeper. It is also perfect for co-sleeping couples. You can also get a king-size bed in extra length, with dimensions of 183 cm x 200 cm.

Olive Earth Bed

The luxurious Olive Earth king bed caters to family cuddles or couples to enjoy personal space.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Double Bed Size

Simply being informed of the dimensions of your ideal bed is not all you need to consider. Here are some important factors to consider to take your sleep experience to cloud nine:

1. Room Layout and Size

There is nothing comforting about squeezing between or hopping over furniture. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary where you feel most relaxed. So, considering the position and proportions of your bedroom furniture pieces is important. This aspect ensures that the bed you buy fits comfortably instead of cramping the space. 2. Sleeping Habits

Your sleeping habits (and those of your partner) determine the quality of your sleep. Hence, selecting an ideal bed size that accommodates both your sleeping styles is important. An extra-length mattress may be more comfortable if you’re taller or tend to move around frequently while you sleep. Similarly, opting for a standard double bed can prevent discomfort or spatial issues if your room is smaller.

3. Budget

Prices can vary significantly between different bed sizes and types. But you don’t have to break the bank to find a bed that meets your needs. Our comfortable, premium and chic bed ranges are reasonably priced. Also, comfort and support are worthwhile investments, as they directly impact your sleep quality and health.
