Going out shopping for a new mattress without knowing what you need to know about bed buying can lead to you making a very big shopping mistake. Shopping for a mattress is not easy as there are so many choices to choose from. Having too many choices can result in us hurriedly buying the first bed or mattress that we think looks good, without us giving it much thought.
As mattress manufacturing has evolved and changed, more features and specifications have been added to them. This can make the decision making a whole lot more difficult. While a shop assistant can help to simplify the choice making by informing you about the various aspects that contribute to the mattress being perfect for you, there are a few mattress myth traps that you could find yourself falling into.
You need to consider the feel of the mattress, the procedures used to make the mattress, the quality of the materials and the other factors that will have an influence on the overall comfort of the mattress.
Myth 1
All mattress are the same
Well, they might all look the same but they are definitely not in any other way the same. The mattresses are designed to support different posture needs, to provide different levels of comfort and to support people of different weights. For this reason, it is important to know that no two mattresses are the same, or will provide you with the same amount of support.
The most comfortable sleeping position you enjoy, your weight, your age and any sleeping disorders, will all play a role in the type of mattress you will buy. The firmness of the mattress will also play a role in the type of sleep you get. So know that not all mattresses are the same, they are designed to meet the needs of the person sleeping on it.
Myth 2
Box spring is king
Somehow, some people have got it into their minds that a bed is not a bed without a box spring. This is totally untrue. Back in the day when mattresses weren’t as sophisticated as they are these days, thin mattresses were supplemented with a box spring that was designed to absorb shock. All a box base really does these days is lift the bed, it doesn’t really have an effect on the comfort and support of the mattress.
In many ways, the box spring is just an unnecessary expense because all you need under your mattress these days is solid support for the mattress.
Myth 3
For back pain, you really need to have a firm mattress
The firmer mattress is great for some people, but it is not suitable for everyone. Every person has a spine with a natural curve and finding the mattress that will properly support this natural curve is most important if you are looking for a mattress aimed to aid your spine. This means that not only must the mattress properly support your spine’s natural curve, but it must also be able to produce the least amount of pressure on this very important part of your body.
The reality is that a mattress which is too firm actually has the ability to cause you to have intense aches and pains when you spend a night on the bed. When choosing a mattress you have to make sure that the mattress is not only going to support your back but that it will also provide enough support to your head, shoulders, hips and even your feet.
Myth 4
A lie down on the mattress is all the test you need to give the mattress
The 5 minute lie down on a bed is not enough to help you to determine if this mattress will support you in all of the ways your body needs support. You will only find out if the mattress is your ideal product if you sleep on it. So either you will need to give the mattress a proper test run and be able to return it should it not suit you or you should be shopping knowing exactly what your body needs and what you should be looking for.
Myth 5
The more you pay out the more guarantee you have of getting a great mattress
As with many other things in life, we have imagined that if we pay out more money we will be getting a better quality product. Sadly this is only an ideal and many times it is only after we have paid out a small fortune that we realise that the product we bought does not live up to our imagination and hopes.
It is true that a quality mattress might not be the cheapest, but it is also true that there is more to determining the quality of a mattress than just the price tag.
Myth 6
Only replace a mattress when it sags
It is true that once a mattress starts to show signs of aging that it is time for a change. What is not true is that you have to wait until the mattress starts to sag before you consider a replacement. While a sagging mattress might not feel all that uncomfortable, it could just be doing unfelt damage to your body. You will read again and again that a mattress has an expiry date after 8 years. This is because it is at this mark that your mattress’ springs might start losing some of their bounce. Keep in mind that this is not true of all mattresses, but if you start feeling the deterioration of the mattress, it is time for a change.
Myth 7
Flipping a mattress is important to keep it in good shape
Maybe back in the day flipping a mattress was necessary to keep the mattress in a good shape, to keep it supportive and comfortable, but this is no longer the case. Many modern mattresses are made to be one sided so they don’t need to be flipped and they shouldn’t be flipped. What you can do to keep your mattress in a good condition is to rotate the mattress every 3 months.
