Organise Your Bedroom In 6 Steps

Author imageThe Mattress Warehouse

What comes to mind when you think of an organised bedroom? You probably just thought of a few things: a soothing colour palette, a cosy bed and tasteful pieces of decor. One thing that was definitely far from your mind is clutter. Disorganization is a peaceful bedroom’s greatest enemy. Drifting off to sleep can be difficult if you are in a room surrounded by reminders of everything you still have not done. Stacks of paperwork, used glasses laying around and clothes scattered on the floor is a great recipe for a headache. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to organise your bedroom!

Why does disorder affect our sleep?

People spend around a third of their lives in their bedrooms. On average you probably spend almost half of the day in your bedroom. That is a lot of time to spend in a space that is cluttered. Clutter and disorganisation can end up affecting the quality of your sleep. Every article that you have read about sleep has probably emphasised the importance of “peaceful surroundings” at least once.

A study was done by St. Lawrence University in New York on the effects that a cluttered environment has on sleep quality. They showed that participants who do not have a lot of clutter in their bedrooms sleep better than those who are at risk of a hoarding disorder. Clutter disturbs your sleep because all your brain sees before bedtime is an unfinished job. As a result, the disorganization will become a dark cloud that constantly hangs over your head. If you let them, disorderly piles and endless nicknacks can overrun your life. Thus you must organise your room!

Imagine waking up to gentle sunlight filtering through your curtains. You stretch out and look around at a peaceful, organised bedroom. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? This article is for all of you that need some help when it comes to organising your bedroom. The following tips will help you declutter, get everything is in its place and maintain the order.

1. Declutter your closet.

organise your bedroom, declutter your closet

Our closets are probably one of the biggest contributors to disorganisation in our lives. Organising your closet will probably be one of the biggest parts of your project. However, before trying to organise your closet, you should declutter it.

The first thing you should do is get rid of anything that does not fit you properly. After that, go through all of your clothes, shoes and pyjamas using the one year rule. Or, if you are feeling particularly brave, you can use the six-month rule! Basically, anything that has not been worn for the past year (or six months) has got to go. Of course, you should not throw away these clothes unless they are in tatters. Consider selling them if they are new enough. Otherwise, donate them.

Be ruthless! By getting rid of clothes that you do not use, you will have more space to appreciate the ones that you truly love. Organise your clothes and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or that you haven’t worn in the past few months. If it’s seasonal (like a sweater or shorts), and you haven’t worn it for the past season, it’s got to go. Excess and clutter are organisation’s nemeses.

2. Apply the same rule to everything.

You don’t need to be a minimalist to think like one. Getting rid of all your things might be too extreme for you, but the idea of keeping only what is functional has its merits. Have a look around your room. What are you not using?

Go through the rest of your room with the same mindset that you had while decluttering your closet. If something is broken or does not get used, let it go. Sort through your books, beauty products and decor, category by category. Anything that you is not functional or that you don’t absolutely love should be put in the donation box.

3. Have a spot for everything.

Have designated areas for beauty items, hair care, books and so on. This will help you avoid the wild goose chases that leave your bedroom in a state. Next time you need to use your lip balm you will know to go to the top drawer of your dresser. No longer will you have to search through shelves, drawers and behind your bed because you don’t know where it is.
Storage is not about keeping as much as you possibly can. It is about knowing exactly where something is when you need it. By storing related items in the same place, you can tell at a glance where things are.

4. Don’t store anything under your bed.

Avoid storing things under your bed as much as possible. Putting stuff under your bed will minimise visual clutter. However, things that do not have a home will quickly find their way under your bed and start accumulating without you noticing. After some time, you will wake up and suddenly find that things are spilling out from beneath your bed. Ultimately, you will find yourself back at square one. The best way to avoid this is to organise your things and to keep the space beneath your bed clear from the beginning.

5. Make organising a habit.

Set aside some time to organise your bedroom once a week. After spending an hour or two organising it, you probably want the order you create to last. Granted, keeping your room neat is a lot easier once the initial major declutter is over. However, that does not mean that your room will keep itself orderly without your help.

When doing your weekly clean, start at your night tables. Throw away anything that classifies as trash. After that, pick up any clothes laying on the floor. Either put them back in your closet or throw them in the wash.
As you move around your room, grab anything that is out of place and put it back where it belongs.

Remember that the smaller a room is, the quicker it can become messy. On the other hand, a big bedroom will hide clutter until there is so much that it overwhelms you. So, it is important to make organising your space a habit. Regardless of the size of your bedroom, giving it some tender love and care every now and then will make sure it stays in top shape.

6. Make your bed every day.

organise your bedroom, make your bed

Even the most stylish bedrooms look messy when the bed is a tumble of sheets. No matter how organized everything else, an unmade bed will stick out like a sore thumb. On the other hand, having a well-made bed instantly makes your bedroom look more organized. Think of making your bed as giving your bedroom a facelift. As you get out of bed, take a few minutes to pull your sheets straight. Doing this is the simplest way to keep your bedroom looking neat and tidy at all times.

Another advantage of this little ritual is that it will signal to your mind that it is time to wake up. Once you make your bed you will not have the option of going back to bed. No matter how tempting it may be to crawl back into bed, you will be able to resist easily. After all, who wants to make their bed twice?

While a messy room can feel like a cage, an organised room is relaxing and cosy. Having a tidy room will allow your mind to rest peacefully and you will sleep a lot better. Taking a few hours to organise your bedroom initially will be worth your while in the end. Be sure to maintain the order that you establish for a few minutes every week. If you do this, your bedroom will transform into the haven it was always meant to be.
