For some researchers, it is just a fad. For others, there is some truth to the whole clean sleeping hype. But what exactly is clean sleeping and is it really possible to benefit from it?
We all know that sleep is one of the most important parts of healthy living. If you are not getting enough sleep, or if you are struggling to get quality sleep, your day to day life can be turned completely upside down. Sleep alters moods, it affects diets and metabolisms and it can even have a drastic effect on your health.
So far, 2017 is the year of clean sleeping, perhaps because it is so ardently backed by a few celebrities who swear it has changed their lives. The only way that you are going to actually know if this trend will work for you is if you try it for yourself. It is not just a philosophy that you need to follow to achieve clean sleep, there are a number of other things you will need to do if you want to enjoy the benefits of clean sleep.
In a nutshell, clean sleeping is a lifestyle change. And it means getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Not just any old sleep, quality sleep! Those who rave about clean sleep claim that since sleep has such a profound effect on your life, the more quality sleep you can get, the better for your health.
Sleep affects the hormones so when you are not getting enough quality sleep you could be experiencing irritability, mood swings, depression, anxiety and even inflammation. If you want to have a clearer mind in the morning, then you need to make sure that you are getting enough high quality sleep.
It goes without saying that anyone can sleep 8 hours, right? Simply go to bed a little earlier. But that is not the way that life works. Even if you are one of the lucky ones who can climb into bed early, there is no guarantee that you will be sleeping properly for those hours.
What you do during the day can have a massive effect on the quality of your sleep later on. First of all, none of us seems to be getting enough sunlight. Life in an office, behind a screen, can be one of the first things that affect your sleep. Although the most you could do to change this is to sit in the sun during your lunch break, there are a few other things that you could be doing to ensure that you get quality sleep every night, for 8 hours.
If you follow our blogs, you already know that cutting back on the screen is one of the best things you can do for your sleep. Shutting down an hour or so before you go to bed can go a long way towards ensuring that you sleep deeply later on. Don’t sleep with your phone under your pillow. And keep in mind that the longer you stare at your screen during the day, the less quality sleep you are likely to be enjoying later on.
When your day begins with a little exercise, you might find that you begin to sleep better later on. Exercise remains one of the best tools at your disposal when you are looking to improve the quality of your sleep. A once-off session of exercise in the morning won’t necessarily be getting you to sleep, it is more of consistency with your exercise thing that will help you sleep better as time progresses. Even those who enjoy a brisk walk a few times a week were reported to be sleeping better.
There are few things more annoying than having your alarm clock screaming in your ear, reminding you that there are only a few hours to go before you have to be at work. But there is not always a need for an alarm clock. Sure, there will always be those days when you are too tired to risk not having a wakeup call. But then there are those days that you can rely on your natural circadian rhythms. When you wake up naturally, you can be almost certain that you have had more than your share of good sleep.
A lot of the time, we don’t pay all that much attention to what we put into our bodies. If you are not eating proper healthy food, you might have just found the reason you are not sleeping as well as you need to. You already know that alcohol and caffeine can mess up your sleep, but did you know that your sleep can be equally affected by not eating enough fibre? Eating healthier, lighter meals can help to improve your sleep.
Making peace with your emotions or ending a fight with your partner amicably can improve your sleep. Emotions can keep you awake and if you are going to be angry or feeling unappreciated by your partner, you could find that you are not enjoying good quality sleep. So follow the old marriage advice of never going to bed angry.
Other ways that you can transform your sleep into clean sleep, is by purchasing better quality sheets, turning off all of the lights and sleeping in a dark room, and by trying to not sleep on your stomach. Research has shown that sleeping on your stomach can lead to neck and back problems, so you might want to reconsider your sleeping position.
It won’t be easy to turn your nighttime routines around and incorporate these tips, but it will be worth it if you find that it improves your sleep. As we always say, find what works best for you and go with that!
