Bunk beds

The modern bunk bed has its origins further back than most people are aware of. Prototypes of the bed are far more humble than the bunk bed we see today. A variety of practical applications made it an irresistible concept to develop. Over time it evolved to provide buyers with unlimited options to choose.

The history of bunk beds

Long before the advent of the first bunk-type bed, people slept on the floor and used hay to separate each sleeper. The poorer classes in the middle ages would create more space by building a primitive form of the modern bunk bed. Archaeologists credit the ancient Egyptians as the first society to construct formal beds. They also have evidence to substantiate that the Egyptians fashioned the initial version of the bunk bed. These resembled compact lofts and were distant relations of the bunk beds of today.

Modern warfare provoked the development of the modern bunk bed. The bunk bed gained momentum during wartime to augment an urgent need for extra sleep space. Subsequently, gradually the bed learned an increase in favour of twentieth-century families. Homes, where space is at a premium, require more effective use of existing sleep area. The bunk bed provides this most efficiently.

Advantages of bunk beds

The most obvious benefit is that these beds save on space. Many more middle-class families have access to homes. Modern homes are substantially less spacious than the large family homes of the past. Conveniently, the bunk bed enables siblings to share a room without occupying all the floor space. Sufficient square footage remains available for other needs.

A large room can house four or more children. Bunk beds are thus trendy in school hostels and orphanages.

Contemporary versions of the bed include storage space with the result that there is considerably more place to keep essentials.

Having bunk beds saves on expenditure. The family need not purchase chests and cupboards since the beds provide a surplus of extra storage space.

Store children’s toys and paraphernalia underneath your bunk bed. Maintaining a neat and tidy environment is almost effortless.

Children learn how to live close to others harmoniously. Siblings spend more time in each other’s company, and bonding evolves naturally.

Youngsters love the adventure of climbing up and down the bed. Design options allow for freedom of creative expression. Bedtime becomes an adventure.

Youth hostels around the world can offer cheap accommodation.

Certain bunk beds have a drawer at the bottom which houses a mattress. These are ideal for sleepovers and are easy to push back in once the visitor leaves.

Some concepts contain an inbuilt study area with a table and shelving.  Issues regarding the need for more workspace are a thing of the past.

The bed can be customised as the child grows up. Purchasing a new bed or more bedroom furniture will not be necessary.

Shapes of bunk beds – (which way will suit your needs)

The form that suits each family is unique to individual needs and available space. Many choices are available which means that you can make your final decision based purely on the look that you prefer. Address all other design aspects with the provider. Clarify your unique requirements and make your decision accordingly.

The most commonly available arrangement is the original prototype.  Two single beds align, one directly above the other. A ladder enables access to the top bunk. A railing has always been a common design element. The barrier protects the sleeper in the top bunk from rolling out of bed.

A much-loved alternative is a double bed with a single bed at the top. The bottom bed is perfect to use as a couch or as sleepover space when friends visit. As with most bunk beds, a ladder for easy access is a standard feature.

L-Shaped bunks are relatively new on the market. Naturally, the beds are situated one above the other. In this case, they form an L-shape. Beneath the top bed, there is usually an inbuilt study area. Drawers fill the remaining gaps in the design. Often there is a drawer on wheels beneath the bottom bunk. The receptacle contains a mattress for sleepover guests and is a convenience that is a standard part of most models.

brown wooden bunk beds

.Triple stacked bunk beds are popular in army camps and youth hostels. As the name suggests, the structure houses three single beds one directly above the other.

The consumer also enjoys layouts that include the well known Asian futon mattress. There is an added convenience of extra seating during the day. Folding the bottom bunk into a couch is an excellent use of space.

Additionally, the shape of the wood that encases the mattress comes in varied forms. The choices range from waves to loops or slats.

Whatever you are capable of conceptualising, is easy to arrange. Moulding the original shape is something that is achievable. A handy adult can adjust the existing configuration to one that is more favourable. The employment of a carpenter is another option.

In the distant past, carpenters fashioned the bed from wood. Later on, metal became the prominent material of choice. Metal could withstand the humidity of exotic climates as well as the threat of fire that war brings. Currently, wood is once again the material of preference. People love wooden designs because of their earthy look. However, many others prefer wood because it is easy to paint and varnish. Colour options are as unlimited as the imagination.

Alternatives to the original design are infinite. An extensive choice of quirky additions is easy to implement. Some have a staircase built into the corner of the plan. Selections range from plain to decorous. By using a few extra wooden panels, the manufacturer can create an entire fantasy wonderland. Some resemble princess castles or secret hideaways and others look like boats or the lairs of dragons.

More selections remain available to the buyer. After installing the bed the purchaser can make numerous easy additions that personalise a child’s sleep area. Hanging curtains to create privacy for sleeping or studying is a lovely feature. The curtain for the top bunk may require the skills of a  professional to install rods into the ceiling. For the bottom bunk, a small curtain wire and screw is perfect. Adding decorative hooks for handbags, scarves and hats is a simple matter for any adult able to wield a drill.

There is ample reward in the fact that the bedroom transforms into a place where the child’s imagination can take flight.

Conclusion

With the excellent versatility of the bunk bed, granting the desires of any child becomes accessible to most parents.

Do it yourself or hire a professional, the choice is up to you. The beds are respectful to the budget and come in such a variety of shapes, colours and designs. They are easy to customise and provide many years of pleasure and comfort.  In a world where space is at a premium, it appears that the bunk bed is here to stay.
