Bedding Tips: Buy the Right Size Duvet Covers

Author imageThe Mattress Warehouse

Buying the right bedding is equally important to buying the right bed. If you recently bought a new bed, you might be on the lookout for new bedding as well. Moreover, with the onset of winter, you’re likely searching for something nice and warm, like a duvet. And with duvets come duvet covers. So if you are looking for any (or all) of the above, keep reading. The Mattress Warehouse put together this short guide to help you choose the right duvet cover sets, at a good price, and in a relatively short amount of time.

Bedding wars – Duvets vs. Comforters! Find out why duvets are so popular

As we’ve already mentioned, upgrading your bed invariably means upgrading your bedding set. You’d probably agree that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to buy a good new bed but then to skimp on the linen. So you want to get a complete bedding set that will fit in with how you decorate your room but because you bought a bed you might not have a lot of cash to spend. And that is where duvets (duvet inners) and duvet covers come in. Let us explain:

  • Duvets are cheap(er): Down comforters are super luxurious, yes, but they are also expensive. On the other hand, you can buy a decent duvet for a lot less!
  • Chop and change with a variety of duvet covers: A big and heavy blanket is great for the winter, but it never changes. On the other hand, you can easily change your duvet cover to suit the season or your mood.
  • No massive cleaning missions: Combining a duvet with a duvet cover makes for some low maintanence bedding cleanups. The cover protects the duvet inner from stains and if you happen to spill on the cover, you can simply take it off and put it in the washing machine.

So if you were wondering…

What do you use a duvet cover for?

Duvet covers serve a dual purpose. Firstly to keep your duvet inner clean. And then secondly, to spice up the look of your room. They wash easily and while one is in the wash, you can put another one on the duvet inner. So it’s like, two birds with one stone. New bedroom vibes plus clean bedding!

2 Reasons why you need a new duvet

Even if you did not recently replace your bed, it might still be time to get a new duvet and duvet cover. You see, like most everything else, duvets age. And with age, they start to lose their ability to keep you warm and comfy during those cold winter’s nights. As the pores in your duvet clog up, they become less effective. But let’s break it down for you. Here is why you need to get a new duvet:

  1. Your duvet is old: You’ve probably guessed this by now. But we had to say it anyway. Take this questionnaire to see if your bed should be replaced. If the answer is yes, then you should definitely replace your bedding as well!
  2. No matter what you do, your temperature just isn’t right: If you have this problem at night, you should seriously consider getting a new duvet set.

Tip: If you are too warm/cold at night, make sure that your new duvet is not too warm/cold. Heavier duvets tend to be warmer, so if you want something cooler look for a light duvet.

Which duvet cover is best? Bedding sizes and fabrics

We might be stating the obvious, but different sized beds need different sized bedding. And the same goes for duvet cover sets. If you have a king-size bed, a double size duvet might look a bit lost on it. And the inverse is also true. A king size duvet cover on a double bed might look like overkill (unless, of course, that is the look you are going for). So,

What is the best duvet to buy?

First thing’s first. The duvet that you buy must fit on your bed. So make sure that you buy a duvet and -cover that matches the size of your mattress. Of course, if you have a double bed, a double bed duvet will have a bigger surface area than the top of the mattress. This is simply so that it covers the mattress and then some. You don’t want your duvet fit perfectly on top of the mattress, because then, when you climb in bed, the duvet won’t cover you up completely. Which will lead to poor quality sleep.

Furthermore, the type of fabric that the duvet (and especially the duvet cover) is made from is also crucial. You don’t want to get a duvet and cover set that triggers your allergies. Likewise, you don’t want a cover that makes you itch. So if you suffer from allergies, look for a duvet that is made from microfibers instead of down. Moreover, look for a duvet cover that feels soft to the touch. Cotton is usually the way to go, but if you want something extra warm, go for a flannel cover. Linen duvet covers are available, but they tend to be rougher than cotton.
