So you want to beautify your bedroom. And let’s be honest, the most prominent feature in your bedroom is your bed. So if you want to make the space you sleep in look better, the first place to start is to create a beautiful bedding set.
We here at The Mattress Warehouse know a thing or two about beds and bedding, so we put together an easy-to-follow, quick guide on how to create your own bedding sets. We’ll tell you everything you need to know – from the difference between flat- and fitted sheets to duvets and comforters (and everything in between).
Go ahead, keep reading.
A bedding set covers the mattress to make it more comfortable to sleep on. It also serves to decorate your bed and is normally made up from:
And there you have a basic set of linen for your bed. However, you don’t have to limit yourself to this list of items. You can always add in some extra accessories to make your bed even more enticing to sleep in. For instance, if you tend to spill coffee in bed, you should add a mattress protector to the list. So that when you do spill, your mattress stays… You guessed it! Protected. Furthermore, you can stack some colourful throw pillows on the bed to give it a more homey vibe. Or add a vibrant quilt that matches the decorative style you are going for.
Going back to the basic list, you might have noticed something. We mention flat sheets and fitted sheets. Duvets and comforters.
So you might be wondering…
A fitted sheet has four elastic corners that fit snugly around the corners of your mattress. Whereas a flat sheet does not have fancy elastic corners. You can use either one of these types of sheets to cover the mattress. Although it is easier to put a fitted sheet over the mattress, some homemakers prefer to use flat sheets in their stead. However, normal flat sheets won’t just magically stay in place, so you’ll have to know how to fold “hospital corners” to keep them firmly over the mattress.
Duvets are made from synthetic materials or natural fabrics, like down. Moreover, for budget, hygiene and decorative purposes it is recommended that you use a duvet cover with a duvet:
Comforters can be made from synthetic or natural fabrics. Also, they have a built-in (or sowed in) cover. Coming in various fashions and styles, you could definitely use an exotic comforter to give your room an extra splash of colour. Use a flat top sheet between your fitted sheet and the comforter for hygiene. Some comforters are machine-washable, but others require specialist cleaning. You can use your comforter like a duvet, if you put a duvet cover over it.
That is entirely up to you. Make a pro’s and con’s list from the descriptions we provided above and choose which item would best suit your bedroom needs.
So now that you know what a bedding set is, you are obviously wondering…
There are a couple of factors to take into account when talking about luxurious bedding:
A lot of sheets are made from cotton, but you also get bamboo-, synthetic- and of course, silk sheets. Most of you will agree that silk sheets have a romanticised luxurious air about them. However, if you are on a budget you can still find super soft cotton and bamboo sheets that feel just as smooth.
That’s where thread count comes in.
Generally, you’d want a sheet (and matching pillowcases) to be woven with a thread count of between 150-300. If the thread count is too high, your sheets won’t breathe properly. On the other hand, if it is too low, you’ll end up with a flimsy sheet.

Great!
