And that is where The Mattress Warehouse comes in. We want to help you get the perfect bed. So if you want to go bed buying, but you’re not sure how to go about it in these strange times, keep reading.

The key to bed buying

You might have heard this before, but people spend roughly one-third of their lives in bed. And so if that is the case, it is quite important to have a good bed, wouldn’t you agree?

But what exactly is a good bed? Is it the most expensive one on the market? Well yes, that one is probably good, but it might not be a good bed for you. Everyone has a unique sleeping style and you need to get a bed that fits yours.

And that is the key to bed buying: getting that bed that fits your sleeping style perfectly!

Now you might be wondering how to go about finding that one bed. It kind of sounds like finding a needle in a haystack, doesn’t it? However, with these simple steps, anyone can buy a bed that suits their needs:

Step-by-step guide on the best bed buying tips

There are a few steps to bed buying:

  1. Pick a comfort level
  2. Select an optimum bed size
  3. Decide on a budget
  4. Do research
  5. Make a purchase

If you follow these steps carefully, you are sure to find a bed that will give you many happy nights of restorative sleep.

1. Is it better to sleep on a hard or a soft mattress?

That depends on how you sleep.

In the world of bed buying, the hardness of your mattress is referred to as its comfort level. There are three broad categories of comfort:

  • Plush: These mattresses are deliciously soft and are perfect for people who prefer to sleep on their sides. Because of how soft these mattresses are, they mold perfectly to the curves of your body and help to keep your spine aligned. Some back sleepers also prefer a soft mattress.
  • Medium: Just like the name suggests, these mattresses fall in the middle of the comfort range. They are perfect for your guest bedroom, because they can accommodate back sleepers, side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Moreover, if you and your partner have different sleeping styles, medium mattresses are the way to go.
  • Firm: Designed not to give way under pressure, firm mattresses are perfect for stomach sleepers and some back sleepers. If you sleep on your side this comfort rating is not for you, because your hips and shoulders will take a lot of strain during the night and you’ll end up feeling sore and grumpy in the mornings.

So first thing’s first, identify your sleep style and then decide on what level of comfort you want from your new bed.

2. How big should my bed be?

Well, there are a couple of factors to take into account when deciding on bed size.

  • You have to think about the size of your bedroom. Ideally, you’d want at least a meter’s worth of floor space around your bed. Otherwise, the room becomes cramped, which might lead to irritation (not a feeling that you want to associate with your bedroom).
  • Then you have to look for a bed that is not too small for your body proportions. Sleeping in a cramped space is not conducive to good, restorative sleep. It is recommended that your bed should be taller than you.

Check out our bed size dimension chart here.

3. How much should I pay for a good mattress?

Remember what we said right at the beginning of this guide? You spend a lot of time in bed. And as such, we advise that you do not skimp when it comes to buying a bed.

On the other hand, we understand that everyone cannot spend a fortune on their bed. So we do not recommend that you just go and buy the most expensive bed that you can lay your eyes on. That is why step one and two are so important! Once you’ve identified the right comfort level and bed size, it will be easier to set up a budget.

Once you have a budget in mind, you can always surf the net for bed sale’s or beds for sale and capitalize on those reduced prices.

4. Do in-depth research

Okay so you have a good idea of what kind of bed you need and how much you are willing to pay for it. That is great! However, that doesn’t mean that you just want to go to the nearest bed outlet and buy the first bed that falls within your price range, does it?

So before you do that, do some research. Read up on different mattress brands, decide on what type of mattress you want to buy (foam or spring) and get clued up on return policy’s, warranties and guarantees.

5. Go ahead and buy that dream bed

Final step to bed buying - make the purchase.

After doing all of your research, you are now ready to make a purchase. But before you do that, make sure that there are no hidden costs. Some companies charge extra for deliveries and returns (at The Mattress Warehouse we have free nationwide delivery, as well as a customer-centric return policy).

Also find out about different buying options. If you don’t have enough cash to make a once-off purchase, ask your bed retailer if you can make monthly payments.

Bed buying, done!
